Strategy

Our key idea for September is a possible switch from fixed income into equities. Fixed income dollar yields have been cooling off for a while already, while 2017 seen a major contraction in domestic yields, stimulating investors to switch into equities. This could have created some selling pressure in the local bonds space especially on the emerging markets. Our previous ideas for this year: Rise of Austro Hungary, Silk Roads, Gold have been doing quite robust so far this year.
In light of the former idea of switch from money markets and fixed income into equities the paths taken by domestic investors rather than cross border investors are become more important. While some emerging markets are more prone to flow trade stimulated by this trend i.e. Russia, Turkey, Brazil and China. In this switch firstly the lower beta and higher dividend assets will be chased, b ut later if the trade gathers speed the growth and broader markets will be chased as well.
Stimulated by this trade value has been playing catchup with growth in August as the moth seen value outperforming growth: On the emerging markets Russia and Brazil have significantly outperformed China and India. While among developed markets equities Denmark was a leader followed by Austria, Italy and France. Value stocks are generally lower beta, so put it in other words lower beta outperformed in August. But overall since the beginning of the year, growth stocks outperformed one the back of expectations of higher earnings growth in 2018.
In bonds space Mongolian yields continued its massive contraction followed by Iraq credit which trades now below 7%. While Venezuella and US were among laggards. In funds space biggest inflow was recorded by Large Cap funds, Precious Metals commodities funds as well as by Small Cap funds and emerging market funds. Midcap and consumer discretionary funds lagged.
Organge juice, Nickel metal and silver outperformed in the commodities space. Laggards include mostly softs.
Palladium, Nickel and Gold have been the perennial leaders in commodities space YTD and silver, gold and Nickel added another 10%, 7% and 14% in August.
Barrick Gold is one of our top pick on quanta mental rankings.
MidLincoln would be keen to receive new investors. In case of interest please contact ML team. Would ML to invest further - its initial goal will be monetising whatever has been done so far and investing into sales effort. Selling more subscriptions especially in light of MIFID changes and getting more partners for consulting and JVs.
MidLincoln recent milestones include:
  • 1. entering into a partnership with large GEM asset manager to develop Quantamental Investment platform. In this challenging project we are in the process of developing a platform which can be used by one of the asset management industry leaders to build its quantamental research/ machine managed investment products.
  • 2. Receiving a mandate to research global junior gold mining companies sector, that could become a large ET product in the near future.
  • 3. Rolling out a full set of global research products that are not crucial but are considered as "Nice to Have" by key institutioanal investors and very timely in light of MIFID changes
  • 4. Launching Midlincoln rural craft intitative - a link between sector research product and real businesses.
MidLincoln is unique. It is positioning as top investment research house with multiple locations in various countries in "rural or small town settings". MidLincoln plans significant outreach into local communities in the places where it is located by taking onboard and educating local workforce to help with investment analysis as well as developing small craft based businesses in the key 10 sectors to keep brewing the ideas for sector consulting product and to help local communities and to create additional revenue lines. • 1. consumer discretionary sector "souvenir production business"
  • 2. "comic car production" as a way to penetrate engineering and automotive sector
  • 3. "mixed martial arts business" to penetrate healthcare and consumer entertainment sector
MidLincoln recently secured promise of significant commitment of funds starting H2 2018 to open the next MidLicnoln research rural office in Toukmanuk - Armenian village close to a big gold mine.
